Web Map Services and Web Feature Services

Web Map Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS) provide a way of delivering geoscience maps and data using established internet protocols developed by the Open Geospatial Consortium.

WMS and WMTS services deliver spatial information as map images (eg, JPEG, PNG). Features displayed in the map images can be queried to view descriptive information.

WFS services deliver data in a standard XML format. Data from some WFS services can also be downloaded as CSV, Shapefile, KML, and JSON. WFS data may be structured according to standard, community-agreed schemas. For example, Australian geoscience agencies deliver WFS data using the Australian standard schemas MinOccML and MineralTenementML for mineral occurrences and mineral tenements; and the international standards GeoSciML and EarthResourceML for boreholes, mines and mineral resources.

The URL's given below for WMS, WMTS and WFS services are "service endpoint" URL's. They will not resolve in a simple web browser (like Internet Explorer, Chrome, or Firefox). The service endpoint URL's should be used in desktop mapping applications (eg, QGIS, ArcGIS, MapInfo) and specialised web portals like the Geoscience Portal.
